Program-Driven Mixed-Use Design
This project focused heavily on integrating different programs into the design—a USPS store and a school. The design features 12 classrooms positioned at the ends for optimal light and views, along with two outdoor classrooms. Spanning four floors, the design includes two elevator shafts, an accessible bathroom, and a storage room on each floor. Central to the design is the circulation core, where two sets of staircases enclose a central area equipped with elevator shafts, storage rooms, and accessible bathrooms. Classrooms and offices are strategically located at both ends of the building. Significant consideration was given to placing the USPS storefront at the front of the building, providing easy access for the public, while the rest of the building was designed to serve the needs of the student occupants. The primary focus of this project was to ensure that all programmatic requirements were successfully met within the design. However, I believe that some aspects of the design were compromised as a result. If given more time or another opportunity to redo this project, I would remind myself to look beyond the programmatic needs and focus more on the overall architectural quality.
